A lovely Japanese maple is on sale this week in the nursery. This Acer palmatum is called 'Red Dragon'. A lace-leaf, it gets 5-7' H and 6' W at maturity (or 10 years). These are slow growers and need a protected area to flourish. Morning sun afternoon shade produces the best color. In deeper shade, the leaves will green up. Fall color is a brighter red!
But, you say, my neighbor has a Japanese maple planted on the south side of his house out by itself! Why can't I plant this tree out there??
These little guys are prone to leaf scorch. As well, winter winds and winter sun do a real number on them. Protection from wind is as important as protection from too much sun.
